Meet the Môn Gwyrdd youth forum!

What's the forum all about?

The Môn Gwyrdd youth forum, which began in 2016, is a group of young people aged between 16 and 24 living in north-west Wales. We are passionate about learning about the environment and helping bring communities together to protect it.

We run monthly sessions focusing on a broad range of subjects from marine to terrestrial conservation, to the nature and climate crisis. You have the chance to:

  • Learn about the nature on your doorstep, it’s threats and how you can be part of the solution to help protect it.
  • Explore nature in North Wales.
  • Develop conservation skills that will be valuable in the green sector.
  • Get involved with community work and events.
  • Add experience to your CV.
  • Meet other like-minded young people.

"I love being able to get out and see new things around Anglesey and North Wales, there's always new things to learn about or do. It's great to see how the forum keeps evolving not knowing what it could become in the future."   -   Jayke

Meet our youth forum members!

Hi, my name's Selina

Selina Mon Gwyrdd Youth Forum

Selina

I've been part of the youth forum since 2023 when I took part in the summer conservation traineeship. I joined because I have always loved nature and being outdoors.

I love hiking, photography, birds and making videos about the natural world. The forum has given me multiple opportunities to take part in community action, like attending the Restore Nature March in London, practical conservation skills like surveying for harvest mice and chough on Anglesey and has allowed me to meet other like-minded people from my local area and even down in South Wales.

I have loved every minute of being part of this community and would recommend it to anyone.

Hi, I'm Felix

Felix

I'm a long time youth forum member and an independent filmmaker. I got involved with the Trust through their traineeship a few years back and have continued with surveys, walks and taking part in events. Alongside my sister, Selina, I have been working freelance for the Trust as a videographer and editor to create documentaries and promo videos on their events and wildlife. Many of these videos can be found on their YouTube channel.

I got involved with the youth forum as a way to meet new people and explore new places around Wales, which I really enjoy. Outside of the Trust I make short horror films on my YouTube channel @RedWireProductions.

Hi, my name is Isobel

I was part of the Ocean Rescue Champions project, and got involved with the Môn Gwyrdd youth forum through that. I am very passionate about caring for our planet, especially stopping climate change in order to protect all the wildlife, land, ocean and people around the world. Therefore, I joined this project to take more action!

My favourite things about the youth forum are being able to help the environment locally and on a larger scale, and meeting great new people! With the project, I hope to get opportunities to create visible change in my area and around the world, and to support local projects working hard to do the same. The NWWT has given me fantastic opportunities so far, even learning to snorkel, and I can’t wait for more to come! "

"I joined the forum as a young person myself, way back in 2018 when I signed up for one of the early editions of the Youth Conservation Ranger Traineeship courses and they haven't been able to get rid of me since! With Môn Gwyrdd, I've been heavily involved in two big youth development projects (Our Wild Coast and Stand for Nature Wales), helping young people find their voices and passion in the fight to protect our wildlife and natural habitats.

I have learnt lots of different conservation skills, taken part in different citizen science surveys, organised and helped run pop-up events, spoken to people about making steps towards being more sustainable and, in 2023,g got the chance to work for North Wales Wildlife Trust at Llyn Celanedd Nature Reserve as an Engagement Officer. I really enjoy meeting many different people, all passionate about nature in different ways.

What I love the most about nature is the wellbeing aspect; taking a moment to step out into nature really does wonder for you, emotionally and mentally. I'm hoping to get my foot in the door of the conservation sector myself, and the youth forum is a great way to continue gaining new and interesting key skills."

Meet the staff

‘I’m the trusts EDI support officer, but I also help with the youth forum. I first joined the original forum in 2016 as a youth member. I started off going to meetings, just by chance really. It gave me the opportunity to go on trips to interesting places, learn more about wildlife, which I’ve always loved but hadn’t had much chance to do after being ill for ages.

At the start it took a while for us all to get to know each other and be a bit less nervous of sharing our ideas and what we wanted the group to be. But we ended up doing so much, talked to all kinds of people, campaigned, did conservation work, ecological surveys, field trips, online talks. We’ve been to Wales wide youth summits, even the Sennedd. We’ve met important people, including Rhun ap Iorweth at a beach clean on Anglesey. We’ve been to massive protests like Restore Nature Now in London, and small local ones too.

My place in the forum is very different now, since I’ve become a staff member, but I know how much the work we do matters because I’ve been part of it for so long.
We have always been youth led, with the staff facilitating what happens and suggesting things, but ultimately the forum members decide what matters to them. It’s a chance to protect nature, in the ways that you feel will have the most impact Or to help set you up for a future working in the green sector. Or like me when I joined, to get outside, learn to enjoy nature again, and maybe help support other people’s access to the world outside, so they get to do all the fun things we did too."

Hi, I'm Ellen

I joined the youth forum in 2019 after taking part in the summer traineeship offered by the Stand for Nature Wales project during the summer before I headed to Bangor University. Whilst at university, I was able to get involved with all kinds of forum activities. This included collecting and planting seagrass to restore habitats, taking part in peaceful protests, writing letters to (and meeting) politicians, getting to know other wildlife-lovers across Wales and in the UK, and even running my own art-based nature project in my local community!

In 2023, I started working at the Trust as an intern in the communications and marketing team and since then I’ve had a number of roles, including working as a project officer, trading officer and youth development officer. As a youth forum staff member, I hope to support other young people to learn more about nature, take action for wildlife, develop skills and find a place to belong.

My favourite thing about being part of the youth forum has been the opportunity to develop my confidence (I used to be very shy!). I’ve enjoyed learning about some of the incredible projects and people working to protect the environment and tackle climate change. I’ve even been able to get involved with some of them myself! It’s helped me to realise how amazing and diverse our world is and how people and wildlife can benefit each other.

Hi, I'm Jayke!

"I first joined the original forum in 2016 during the Our Wild Coast project, with about 2 hours notice, after our groups rep backed out last minute. I went to that very first forum meeting not knowing what to expect at all or anyone there. There were reps from school groups, scouts, all kinds of different people, and i was from the local LGBT youth group, so we all had different perspectives and aims.

It took quite a while for us all to get to know each other and be a bit less nervous of sharing our ideas and what we wanted to do.
Since then we've done so much, talked to all kinds of people, campaigned and done conservation work and even helped write the funding bid for the current Stand for Nature Wales project, so young people have been involved since before it even began.

The forum members aren't group reps now, but we still all come from very different places and have lots of ideas that we all share and discuss to decide what we want to do, and everyone gets to be involved in the things they like best. We've even done silly things like the climate bake off, which was a great excuse to just eat lots of cake."
