Saltmarsh in North Wales

What work are we doing to conserve our saltmarshes?

In North Wales we have many amazing saltmarshes. Saltmarshes are found in distinct areas with perfect tidal influence such as the Dee Estuary, Conwy Bay, the Menai Strait and Pen Llŷn a’r Sarnau. Often flooded with sea water this transitional area has conditions that allow specialised plant life to grow, in turn attracting other wildlife. Common scurvygrass, Shrubby sea-blite and Marsh mallow are some of the salt tolerant plant species that grow in saltmarsh. So many animals call saltmarsh their home, from the cannibalistic saltmarsh Wolf Spider and illusive juvenile Flounders to Lapwings and Redshanks which use the salt laden pastures and mudflats for nesting and feeding.

Thank you to our funders, WWF and Sky who have enabled us to establish the North Wales Saltmarsh Project. Through this project we'll be bringing together historic and current data and inspiring people of all ages to learn about this incredible habitat.
