Some of our young volunteers reflect on yet another successful annual Plast Off Beach Clean and what the event means to them.

Plast Off is always a good day. It has this exciting energy about it because there are so many of us out and about doing good for the environment and it's the start of a new, fresh year.

Plast Off 2026 had a brilliant energy too, over 160 people came to pick up harmful plastic off the beach. A total of 454kg of waste was collected. Items such as fishing nets, bottles and even plastic toys were found and taken off the beach to be recycled, put into general waste or even to be kept as treasures. For example, a member of the public found a plastic toy in the shape of a bunch of carrots and a boomerang was also found. The saying 'one man's rubbish is another man's treasure' is definitely proved by Plast Off!

Seeing all of this, participating in the litter picking, sorting out the equipment and talking with the public and with my friends at NWWT made volunteering at this event so special.

This was our fourth year at Plast Off and we were buzzing for this one as always. Plast Off is one of the highlights of volunteering with the Trust for us, because it’s such a big event where we get to see everyone and do something really big! This year we helped organising equipment as well as sorting rubbish.

Being a part of the organising and also helping to welcome everyone was the most fulfilling part of the day for me, on top of seeing the hundreds of kilograms of waste we managed to clear from the beach. It being a coastline that I visit regularly all year round gave me a special sense of pride in what we’d achieved, knowing I’m giving back to the place I’ve made so many memories!
