About the event

We'll meet on site before dusk, look at different types of bat boxes and discuss bat ecology and signs to look out for. Then, we'll take a gentle walk through the reserve with bat detectors to listen out for echolocations.

This is a highly accessible site, entirely on the flat on paths and boardwalks, with seating available every few hundred meters. Limited disabled parking is available closer to the reserve entrance on request.

What to bring

Please bring suitable footwear. If possible bring a small torch/headtorch.

Parking information

Find a safe parking spot on the roadside near to the riding school (SJ 102 838) or take the first left to use the car park.

Big Pool Wood Nature Reserve

Big Pool Wood Nature Reserve

A wonderful reed bed and woodland site filled with wildflowers, birdsong and facilities that allow you to get closer to wildlife.

A small brown bat with large rounded ears, at least a third of it's body length, and wings spread wide as it leaps from the tree on the left side of frame. The background is pitch black as it is night, with a few branches of green leaves coming in from the left where the tree is.
