Cors y Sarnau Appeal
Please help us raise £40,000 to make Cors y Sarnau wilder, wetter, bigger and better!
We have a wonderful opportunity to buy 20 acres of mixed habitat to expand our Cors y Sarnau Nature Reserve by 20%; step up our restoration efforts across this nationally important peatland; and create a truly special, wild wetland for nature and people alike.
We have already secured more than £200,000 from a range of individual donations and grant funders whose generosity has put the acquisition and restoration within our reach. Please help us take the final steps towards our goal.
To improve Cors y Sarnau for wildlife, we will:
- acquire and manage a patchwork of wetland and naturally regenerating woodland to increase the size of the reserve by 20% – supporting the well-known principles of ‘bigger, better, more joined-up’
- create ponds and shallow scrapes to filter water from neighbouring grassland and develop new wetland habitats – benefitting unmistakable plants like bogbean and sundew as well as the invertebrates, birds and mammals further up the food chain
- remove invasive non-native species, including spiraea, rhododendron and sitka spruce, and manage native scrub to improve habitat structure
- create grazing compartments and install pasture pumps and water troughs to reduce the impact of animals poaching the peat soils
- carry out surveys to understand the site’s water levels and land shape, and assess whether installing or improving sluices could help manage water more effectively
