'Fentastic days' on Anglesey!

'Fentastic days' on Anglesey!

In September our Corsydd Calon Môn partnership project ran two family-friendly ‘Fentastic Day’ events - in Neuadd Talwrn near Cors Bodeilio and at Y Ganolfan Llanbedrgoch near Cors Goch - to showcase the heritage, beauty and importance of these incredible wetland habitats. The free events allowed people to get hands-on with citizen science activities, guided walks, and creative workshops.

The Anglesey Fens (or Corsydd) are often overlooked peatlands at the heart of the island, but are in fact the second largest peatland habitat in the UK!

A community coming together

The atmosphere was truly special! Families, local residents, schools and visitors gathered not just to learn, but to celebrate. The events were free, accessible, and inclusive, ensuring that everyone could take part.

Children left with muddy (peaty) hands and wide smiles, adults discovered a new appreciation for the landscapes around them, and the community strengthened its bond with the natural heritage of Anglesey.

Events like Fentastic Days are part of our mission to bring wildlife back and empower people take action for nature.

Activities for all ages

Visitors enjoyed a wide variety of activities designed to spark curiosity and appreciation for the natural world:

  • Guided, interactive nature walks through fen landscapes, highlighting rare plants, dragonflies, and birdlife, alongside the challenges of maintaining the sites.
  • Citizen science water testing sessions with Sbardunno and the Public Mapping Platform.
  • Creative workshops such as nature journaling and art inspired by fen plants and fungi.
  • Storytelling and interactive talks that brought local legends and ecological knowledge to life.

These activities were carefully chosen to make science and conservation accessible, fun, and memorable for all ages.

We hope that these events really have helped inspire and connect people to these unique sites. The fens already mean a lot to many people living around them, but many people do not know that they are there. Fentastic Days helped to show how significant the sites are for nature but also in supporting community, heritage and culture.’

Why the fens matter
These rare habitats are home to some extraordinary wildlife and are a significant ally in combating climate change storing up to eight times more carbon than a rainforest of the same size.

The power of peat!
Peatlands are an incredible carbon store; they cover only 4% of Wales land area yet store 30% of the nation’s land-based carbon. It’s estimated that 90% of Wales’s peatland is damaged and, in this poor condition, they release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

A celebration of the Anglesey Fens
The Anglesey Fens — including Cors Erddreiniog, Cors Bodeilio and Cors Goch — are internationally significant peatland sites. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, North Wales Wildlife Trust is working to restore and protect these habitats for future generations.
