Which chicks?

Which chicks?

BOP

After the sad loss of one of the chicks, we are left with the conundrum of which chicks are actually still in the nest?

After the death of one of the 3 Brenig chicks there has been many a discussions as to which two of the three chicks are still in the nest, and we are being asked this question regularly up at the North Wales Wildlife Trust Lookout on the shores of Llyn Brenig.

It seems for sure that the 3rd chick survived but the jury is still out on whether it was chick 1 or chick 2 which actually died on the 5th June, the same day that chick 3 hatched.

The difference in size would indicates that chick 3 is the smaller of the two in the nest (see the pictures below).

The difference between chicks 1 & 2 is not always as clear as that between them and the 3rd chick, due to the lapse in hatching times.

Chick 1 hatched 01/06/22,

Chick 2 hatched on 02/06/22, 1 day and 11 hrs after the first chick.

Chick 3 hatched on 05/06/22, 3days 19 hrs after chick 1 and 2days 8 hrs after the 2nd chick.

Based on the size difference between the two chicks we think chicks 1 and 3 are more likely to be those that are in the nest but we are not ruling out the possibility of it being chicks 2 and 3, particularly if chick 2 was feeding better than chick 1.

Whichever two they are, we are just thrilled to have two growing chicks in the Brenig nest and as you can see from the Live Stream they are growing daily and doing very well.
