Ospreys off to their wintering grounds

NWWT

It looks as though we now have an empty nest up at the lake.

It looks as though all the Brenig ospreys have now left on migration to their wintering grounds in West Africa. We know that LJ2 is seen in The Gambia but have no idea where LM6 spends the winter or where KA9 and X6 will choose to spend not only this winter but next summer and winter as well, returning as adults in 2024.

KA9 was last seen at the Brenig nest on 27th August, while X6, LM6 and LJ2 were still coming to the nest until yesterday, 30th August. All 3 were seen in the morning and we are sure we saw 3 ospreys over Gors Maen Llwyd (NWWT reserve) on the north side of the lake mid-afternoon although can’t be absolutely certain. Not quite the order you would expect but that’s ospreys!

Let’s all wish them a safe and trouble-free migration, and a good rest in their wintering grounds, LM6 and LJ2 have worked really hard these last 5 months successfully bringing up their first family and getting them ready for migration.  In fact, I think we may all need a rest this winter before welcoming LJ2 and LM6 back to Brenig next spring and watch them raise another family.

Thank you all for following the Brenig Ospreys, your donations to the project, support and visits to Brenig. I’ll be doing some osprey talks over the winter months to keep us all in touch with the ospreys and each other. Here are the last images we have of them before migrating. Kim NWWT
