Our Wild Weekend!

Friday 31st March 2017

Our Wild Coast participants from across North Wales gathered in Aberdyfi last month to take part in the Wildlife Trust’s very first youth environmental adventure weekend.

The Our Wild Coast project is providing opportunities for young people from across the region to discover and undertake positive action for local wildlife whilst also developing important life skills and a sense of pride in their local environment. Last weekend, 36 project participants visited the Outward Bound Centre in Aberdyfi to take part in an exciting residential course designed to test their physical limits and explore their own personal potential. Activities included climbing, canoeing, walking, fire building and taking part in team building games. The course gave participants of various ages from different communities in North Wales the chance to socialise with each other and work together to overcome personal challenges.

Young people aged 11-24 from Coleg Cambria (Northop), West Rhyl Young People’s Project, Abergele Youth Action, Conwy Youth Services, Menai Bridge Scouts, Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones (Amlwch) and Ysgol Glan y Môr (Pwllheli) all took part.

The Our Wild Coast project is aiming to work with 1,440 young people from coastal communities across North Wales by 2020. Working with these groups, the Wildlife Trust is aiming to both improve the condition of important wildlife sites across the region and also identify new sites of wildlife value which can be managed by young volunteers. The project is part of Our Bright Future, a nationwide youth movement supported by the Big Lottery Fund. Our Bright Future aims to tackle three big challenges facing society today - a lack of social cohesion, a lack of opportunities for young people and vulnerability to climate change.
