Clwyd Rare Woodland Mammal Project

supported by the Countryside Council for Wales Species Challenge Fund

The North Wales Wildlife Trust has developed a project to benefit dormice, pipistrelle bats and red squirrels in North-East Wales.

Working in partnership with LBAP groups in Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham, dormouse nest tubes have been placed in carefully selected woodlands to help discover new dormouse populations. These tubes will be monitored for the three years for evidence of dormouse habitation.

The project has also enabled the Clwyd Bat Group to place bat boxes in numerous woodlands across NE Wales to benefit pipistrelle bats.

Following sightings of red squirrels in southern Denbighshire, special hair catching tubes will be placed in suitable woodlands in the area. Hairs caught in the tubes will then be analysed to see if any have come from red squirrels, thereby confirming their presence.
